Sandiaga Uno Says Indonesia’s Sports Tourism Potential Hits Rp18 Trillion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno highlighted the fairly large potential value of sports tourism in Indonesia. He said the potential value reaches Rp18 trillion.

“I just came back from Belitung. Belitung is part of Bangka Belitung. In one weekend, they held sports tourism activities attracting tourists,” said Sandiaga in a written message on Monday, May 30, 2022.

Sandi visited Belitung on Friday, May 27, to participate in the golf event entitled “Let’s Go Belitung Golf 2022”. On the next day, there was a triathlon event attended by foreign tourists from seven countries, local athletes, and triathlon activists.

“The number of participants is 200 people but they come with 2-3 other people so there are around 600 in total. There is also a Sunday morning ride event. For the total visits, there were about 1000 tourists coming for sports tourism,” he added.

He calculated that if one tourist spent US$1,500, and is multiplied by the number of tourists, it will create an economic impact of US$1.5 million.

Sandiaga Uno then replicated it in other sports attractions such as in Bali and the five super-priority tourism areas (DPSP) which could bring 1 million tourists. The circulation of money, he opined, could reach more than Rp18 trillion. However, he underlined that infrastructure is necessary to support tourism.
