Gibran Rakabuming Discloses Kaesang Pangarep’s Political Plans

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Solo Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka confirmed that Kaesang Pangarep expressed interest to go into politics. The oldest son of President Joko Jokowi Widodo claimed he was at first surprised by his youngest brother’s desire.

Gibran said Kaesang made the announcement at a family dinner at Jokowi’s residence in Solo on Monday, January 23, 2023. “I was surprised that he openly told me that he is interested to go into politics,” he told reporters in Solo City Hall, Tuesday, January 24, 2023.

Jokowi and First Lady Iriana, he recalled, also seemed surprised to hear their youngest son’s wish. However, Gibran was tight-lipped when asked about Kaesang’s reasons, claiming to have no idea.

When asked about their father’s comments after the news, Gibran only said that Jokowi was also shocked. He opined that the 27-year-old businessman was still exploring the political world. “Apparently, Kaesang is still exploring it, asking questions. But yesterday (Monday), he actually said that he ‘wants’ to [go into politics].”

He also presumed that Kaesang’s interest in politics arose as the latter was often invited or involved to observe urban development projects in Solo. “He has interests to assist the development.”

According to Gibran, Erina Gudodo’s husband will run for the regional head election, instead of becoming a legislative member of the regional council (DPRD).

“The executive. I’ve just leaked this,” Gibran talked of Kaesang’s plan on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

Gibran also confirmed that Kaesang Pangarep‘s political steps would start from the bottom. However, when asked for details about what regions the latter will run for and which party he will join, Gibran told reporters to ask his brother directly.
