MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine women’s football team secured its spot in the knockout rounds after dominating Indonesia, 6-0, in its final group stage match in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup Thursday in Pune, India.
Racking up six points in Group B, the Filipinos finished at the second spot at 2-1-0 (win-loss-draw) behind leader Australia which led with nine points at 3-0-0.
Malea Cesar capped off the Filipinos’ rampant offense, tapping in Sara Castañeda’s pass from inside the six-yard box in the fourth minute of stoppage time (90+4) at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex.
Katrina Guillou opened the Philippines’ account, converting Sarina Bolden’s missed penalty in the sixth minute. Bolden, however, made up for her earlier blunder as doubled the Philippines’ lead, 2-0, in the 27th minute.
The Philippines continued its attack in the second half with Tahnai Annis fired in a shot from outside the box for the 3-0 lead in the 56th minute.
Jessica Miclat then converted from the spot in the 78th minute before Annis got her double gave the Filipinos a 5-0 lead in the 82nd.
The Philippines is also gunning for the one of the five Asian slots in the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup.
